2022 CEA Economics Job Market Mentoring Events

The CEA, the Canadian Economics Diversity Committee (CEDC) and the Canadian Women Economists Committee (CWEC) are hosting a number of mentoring events this fall, aimed at graduate students on the job market this year or in the coming years.  We hope to have a few focussed panels, Q&A sessions with job market candidates from previous years and those who have served on hiring committees.  We are also planning workshops to help job market candidates perfect their 3-minute "elevator speech" about their research.

Our first meeting was on October 12, at 8PM Eastern.  This was a casual Meet & Greet and information gathering session.  We provided a short overview of the job market and where to find resources, introduce the mentoring committee and gather information about issues and questions that attendees would like to explore further.

Based on the feedback from students on the market, we will hold an information session to provide tips for applications and first-round interviews on Wednesday November 2 (8PM Eastern, 5PM Pacific).  We hope you will be able to join us.

We will also be hosting workshops on the "Three-minute elevator speech."  Being able to succinctly and effortlessly describe your research in under three minutes will start of your interviews on the right path and give a top-notch first impression.  We will have two sessions - November 30 and December 14 - to accommodate everyone.  All students on the market from Canadian universities, or current CEA members on the market are welcome to sign up.   You will be assigned to a small group that includes other students and experienced economists.  More details to come.

Please forward this registration link to all PhD Students who may be on the market this year or next.

To register as an attendee at the CEA Economics Job Market Mentoring Events, please complete the following form.  Zoom links and information will be sent prior to each event: https://forms.gle/FRhGJ8dGo2WWLpgX9

2020 CEEE Reception:

A Virtual Toast to this Year's Canadian
PhD Job Candidates

The Canadian Economics Employment Exchange (CEEE) is an annual event organized by the CEA to facilitate the logistics of in-person interviews between Canadian Economics departments with recent PhD Economists on the Canadian job market. The CEEE also provides valued networking and camaraderie for candidates experiencing the, at times, stressful hiring process. In an ordinary year, around 20 hiring organizations and over 100 candidates congregate at a hotel in Toronto (or at the University Toronto) to hold interviews, gather for a cocktail reception sponsored by the Bank of Canada, and compare notes in the hospitality room.

The reality of this pandemic year means an in-person CEEE is not possible, and departments have transferred to online interviews. Although demand for the in-person CEEE has parted, for 2020 the CEA is organizing this virtual event to help kick-off the Canadian Econ market and bring a modicum of cheer to this unusual job market season:

An online reception to toast this year's Canadian Econ job market candidates with experienced Economists who have served on a hiring committee and experienced the job market themselves at one point!

Please see the event page to register:
 www.economics.ca/events/canadian-economics-employment-exchange-virtual-toast-to-this-years-candidates

Note: the CEA is not involved with individual virtual interviews between candidates and hiring organizations. Hiring departments will schedule their virtual interviews directly with candidates. Candidates should check the relevant job boards (e.g. EconJobMarket site /JOE / Canadian Economics departments' websites) for 2020-2021 job postings accepting applicants.
